Purpose
Statement:
The Louisiana Forestry Teachers' Tour allows for educational teachers,
the developers of the children's mind, an opportunity to gain
insight to the research, development and implementation of Louisiana's
#1 agricultural crop: Timber. Through hands-on tours and one-on-one
meetings with federal, state, industry and non-industrial forest
personnel, informed decisions may be reached through an unbiased
process.
The 5-day workshop is a hands-on, on-the-go workshop that is fun,
exciting and informative. From touring a lumber mill founded in
1890 to a state-of-the-art papermill, this tour will exposed you
to practically all aspects of forestry in Louisiana. You will
have a chance to see Longleaf pine, Pinus palustris, whose
natural area once spread from western Louisiana to southern North
Carolina. The management approaches utilized for the threatened
and endangered Red-Cockaded woodpecker, Dendrocopos borealis.
Also, research development areas, logging sites and product manufacturing
are part of the informative tour. If you feel that you would like
to increase your knowledge with respect to the forestry environment
of Louisiana, this tour is a great place to start.
