Lisa Garcia is a former classroom teacher, having taught Special
Education in the Claiborne Parish school system for 16 years. In
those sixteen years, she taught exceptional children from
Kindergarten through eighth grade, all subjects. She is presently in
her third year as 4-H agent for Claiborne Parish, working for the
LSU Agricultural Center's Louisiana Cooperative Extension Service.
Mrs. Garcia began working with Project
Learning Tree activities in 1990 while serving as a volunteer leader
at 4-H summer camp. Lisa then attended a PLT workshop, and
immediately began using the materials with her special education
students and 4-H members.
She continued one step further by being
trained as a PLT Facilitator in 1994.
Lisa Garcia has used PLT in a variety of ways
and settings in the past nine years. She used the PLT program in
writing her Individualized Educational Programs, using the
activities to teach identified skills to these exceptional students.
Mrs. Garcia has used PLT in a variety of 4-H
activities. She conducts PLT activities at 4- H Club meetings at
least twice a year.
Lisa Garcia has conducted PLT in-service
workshops for Claiborne, Webster and Bossier Parish teachers. She
feels that her teaching experience and successful use of PLT helps
her to encourage teachers to use the activities and not simply put
the book on a shelf.

She uses PLT in her classroom visits to
provide school enrichment activities in science and social studies.

A very successful Project Learning Tree
workshop conducted by Mrs. Garcia was one at the Southern Region 4-H
Volunteer Leader Forum, held at U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville,
Alabama. This workshop was attended by adult leaders from thirteen
states in the Southern Region, as well as those from the Virgin
Islands and Puerto Rico and was an opportunity for Project Learning
Tree to be introduced to educators from all over the southern United
States, and was met with great enthusiasm from the participants.
Environmental Education has always been a top
priority for Mrs. Garcia, as a teacher, 4-H leader, and now as a 4-H agent. Project
Learning Tree has been a valuable resource for her in providing
environmental educational activities and background information.
Using Project Learning Tree assists Lisa Garcia in carrying out the
mission of the LSU Agricultural Center, "to enhance the quality
of life for people through research and educational programs that
develop the best use of natural resources, conserve and protect the
environment, enhance development of existing and new agricultural
and related enterprises, develop human and community resources, and
fulfill the acts of authorization and mandates of state and federal
legislative bodies."
