Learning Tree:
Project Learning Tree (PLT) is an
award-winning environmental education program designed for
teachers and other educators working with students in pre-K
through grade 12. It uses the forest as a "window" into
natural and built environments, helping people gain an awareness
and knowledge of the world around them, as well as their place
within it. Since its introduction in the early 1970s, PLT has been
recognized as one of the premier environmental education programs
in the world. Through hands-on, interdisciplinary activities, PLT
provides students with opportunities to investigate environmental
issues and encourages them to make informed, responsible
decisions.
Project Learning Tree
Would you like to go on a schoolyard safari, make your own paper,
or be a tree? The Project Learning Tree Pre-K - 8th grade guide
contains these and many more activities relating to trees,
forestry, the interrelationships between organisms and their
environment and other ecological concepts. The numerous appendices
and excellent organization of the guide make this program very
user-friendly.
High school modules on forest
issues, forest ecology and other forestry-related topics also are
available. Over 6,000 Iowa educators and youth leaders have
participated in PLT workshops.
What PLT Offers You
The PLT activity guide and
secondary modules are only available to educators when they attend
a workshop. The workshops are designed this way to explain the
philosophy of the program and show how the activities can be
integrated into your existing curricula.
At a workshop you will:
-
Participate in hands-on
activities
-
Learn more about forests,
forest wildlife, forest health and much more
-
Expand your knowledge of
natural resources and teaching skills
-
Meet and share ideas,
information and resources with other professionals
-
Qualifies for professional
development credit
-
Have fun!
The program fee for the workshop is
$15.00 per person and may include additional local charges to cover program
costs. Teachers, environmental educators, nature center personnel
and youth leaders are all invited to participate.
